Located 1,500 meters above sea level, and surrounded by lush forests in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, many consider Goygol (meaning blue lake) the most beautiful lake in Azerbaijan. It was formed after an earthquake in 1139 knocked rocks off the top of Mount Kapaz, which overlooks adding drama to the stunning landscape. Given its beauty, Lake Goygol has long been a source of inspiration for Azerbaijani artists, musicians, and writers, including the great Nizami Ganjavi who lived in the area in the 12th century.
